What does a radio club do?
Being in a radio club allows you to connect with other radio operators in the area. An opportunity to learn and ask for help or advise from other members give you a tremendous opportunity to learn more about amateur radio. You can find out what solutions other have come up to get their signals out. Learn new skills like Morse code and electrical techniques.
Another aspect of being in a radio club is that you can now be a part of a group that can assist during disasters. During a disasters, amateur radio operators can help make contact with others through out the community. Checking in for what help or supplies their area needs. In a disaster, areas may be cut off from each other due to flooding, avalanches, or earthquake damage. Amateur radio operators can contact each other, and relay information back to the Emergency Services.
On the fun side, you can see other people’s equipment set ups. Get a chance to see and work with gear you don’t have. Learn how to make contact with people across the world, whether it be actual radio waves running along the ground, bouncing off the atmosphere, or zipping through the fiber optic world of the internet. No you won’t get free internet, but their is nothing more satisfying than making a connection with someone on equipment of your own. There is satisfaction in knowing that even if the phone and internet goes down, you can still contact someone by radio.
